Charlie Kirk Shot Dead at Utah University Event, Sniper at Large
Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 31, died on Wednesday after a sniper shot him during a speech at Utah Valley University. The attack happened in front of 3,000 people and spread panic across the campus.
Police said the shooter fired a single round from a rooftop. Officers detained two men during the afternoon but released them later. The suspect is still on the run. Utah Governor Spencer Cox called the killing a “political assassination” and a dark day for the state.
Former President Donald Trump reacted quickly. He ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff and promised that his administration would track down everyone involved. In a video message, Trump also blamed harsh political rhetoric for fueling violence.
Videos from the event show Kirk falling after the shot hit his neck. Moments before, an audience member asked him about gun violence in America. The incident turned a planned discussion into chaos.
Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA, the largest conservative youth group in the country. He also hosted a popular radio show and podcast. His new “American Comeback Tour” aimed to visit 15 universities.
This tragedy adds to a growing wave of political violence in the United States. Both Republicans and Democrats condemned the attack. Many leaders warned that violence against public figures threatens democracy itself.
