Illinois residents can register to vote online, by mail, or in person. The state also offers same-day voter registration at polling places on Election Day.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be a resident of Illinois and your election precinct for at least 30 days before Election Day.
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day (you can pre-register at 17 if you’ll be 18 by the general election).
- Not be serving a sentence in a penal institution due to a felony conviction.
Registration Methods:
- Online Registration:
- Register online through the Illinois Online Voter Registration Application.
- You will need a valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID to register online.
- By Mail:
- Download and complete the Illinois Voter Registration Application.
- Mail the form to your local election authority. You can find addresses for your local election authorities on the Illinois State Board of Elections website.
- In Person:
- Register in person at your county clerk’s office, at the DMV, or during a voter registration drive.
- Illinois offers same-day voter registration at polling places on Election Day, allowing you to register and vote at the same time.
Registration Deadline:
- The deadline to register online or by mail is 16 days before Election Day.
- Grace period registration is available at certain locations up to Election Day, allowing you to register and vote during the grace period.
- Same-day voter registration is also available at polling places on Election Day.
Confirm Your Registration:
- You can check your voter registration status using the Voter Registration Lookup tool on the Illinois State Board of Elections website.
