Iowa residents can register to vote online, by mail, or in person. The state also offers Election Day voter registration, allowing you to register at the polling place.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be an Iowa resident.
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day (you can pre-register at 17 ½ if you will be 18 by the general election).
- Not be convicted of a felony (unless voting rights have been restored).
- Not be judged mentally incompetent to vote by a court.
Registration Methods:
- Online Registration:
- Register online using the Iowa Online Voter Registration.
- You will need a valid Iowa driver’s license or state ID.
- By Mail:
- Complete the Iowa Voter Registration Form.
- Mail the form to your county auditor’s office. You can find county auditor addresses on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website.
- In Person:
- You can register in person at your county auditor’s office, DMV, or other government agencies.
- Same-day voter registration is available at polling places on Election Day, but you will need proof of identity and residency.
Registration Deadline:
- The deadline to register to vote is 15 days before Election Day for pre-registration.
- If you miss the deadline, you can still register on Election Day at the polling place with proper identification.
Confirm Your Registration:
- After registering, you can check your voter registration status using the Voter Information Lookup tool on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website.
