Maine residents can register to vote by mail, in person, or even on Election Day. Maine allows same-day voter registration at polling places.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be a resident of Maine.
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day (you can pre-register at 16, but must be 18 to vote).
- Not be under guardianship for mental illness (unless the court specifies that voting rights are retained).
Registration Methods:
- By Mail:
- Complete the Maine Voter Registration Application.
- Mail the form to your municipal clerk’s office. Find addresses for local clerks on the Maine Secretary of State’s website.
- In Person:
- Register in person at your local municipal clerk’s office or at a voter registration drive.
- Maine offers same-day voter registration at polling places on Election Day, allowing you to register and vote at the same time with proof of identity and residency.
Registration Deadline:
- The deadline to register by mail is 21 days before Election Day.
- Same-day voter registration is available on Election Day at your polling place with proper documentation.
Confirm Your Registration:
- After registering, you can check your voter registration status by contacting your local municipal clerk’s office. Maine doesn’t currently offer an online lookup tool.
